Highlighting the urgent need for sustainable environmental practices, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University organized a special lecture under its Eminent Lecture Series on “Health Hazards of Industrial Waste and their Management for Sustainable Development” on March 18.
Sustainability at the Core
The session was chaired by Vice-Chancellor Raj Kumar Mittal, who emphasized that unchecked industrial growth and excessive resource exploitation are leading to serious environmental challenges. He called for responsible use of science and technology to minimize industrial waste and ensure ecological balance.
3R Principles for Sustainable Living
Addressing the gathering, he stressed that the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle must move beyond slogans and be adopted in daily life. He highlighted that real environmental protection requires action at individual, social, and institutional levels.
Keynote speaker Ram Chandra from the Department of Environmental Microbiology shed light on the root causes of industrial waste issues, including lack of awareness and gaps between research and regulatory systems. He underlined the importance of balancing development with environmental protection.
Global Insights, Local Action
The lecture also referenced major global initiatives like the Stockholm Conference 1972 and Rio Earth Summit 1992, along with frameworks such as Sustainable Development Goals. Prof. Chandra shared practical experiences from regions including Lalkuan, Unnao, and Saharanpur, showcasing real-world efforts in waste management.
He also highlighted the medicinal and environmental benefits of plants like neem, makoy, and castor, advocating organic and nature-based solutions for environmental conservation.
The event witnessed active participation from faculty, researchers, and students, with an interactive Q&A session enhancing understanding of the subject. The lecture concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Arpit Shailesh.
