In a proactive step to protect students from the increasing threat of extreme heat, the Uttar Pradesh government has issued comprehensive heat safety guidelines for schools across the state. The initiative aims to help educational institutions prevent and effectively respond to heat-related health emergencies while ensuring a safe learning environment.
The guidelines, issued under the direction of Additional Chief Secretary (Basic and Secondary Education) Partha Sarathi Sen Sharma, require every school to prepare a dedicated Heat Action Plan. Schools have also been directed to appoint a Nodal Health Teacher to oversee heat safety measures and coordinate awareness activities on campus.
As part of the initiative, orientation sessions will be organised for teachers, non teaching staff and students to educate them about heatwave risks, preventive measures and emergency response. Schools have also been instructed to prominently display heat safety advisories and emergency contact numbers on campus.
To strengthen emergency preparedness, institutions must maintain adequate medical supplies, including first aid kits, Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), digital thermometers and arrangements for immediate medical assistance through the 108 ambulance service. Teachers have been advised to identify the early symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke, provide first aid and ensure timely medical intervention whenever required.
The government has also asked schools to spread awareness among parents and the school community by sharing practical dos and donts related to heatwaves. The objective is to minimise health risks and reduce the impact of extreme temperatures on children wellbeing, learning and overall development.
Schools have further been encouraged to improve campus infrastructure by ensuring proper ventilation, creating shaded spaces and adopting heat-mitigation measures such as reflective roofing.
To protect students and staff from extreme temperatures, the government has directed all schools to suspend outdoor activities between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm until further notice.
