In a significant step towards improving rehabilitation services for persons with disabilities, Dr. Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University (DSMNRU), Lucknow, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Jaipur based Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), one of the countrys leading organizations working in assistive rehabilitation.

The collaboration aims to bridge academics, research, and practical rehabilitation services, enabling wider access to advanced prosthetics, orthotics, assistive devices, and skill development programmes. The MoU was signed by Registrar Rohit Singh and BMVSS Secretary Dr. Deependra Mehta in the presence of Vice Chancellor Prof Sanjay Singh.

Under the agreement, both institutions will jointly work on prosthetics and orthotics, rehabilitation sciences, inclusive education, assistive technology development, and collaborative research. Students of the university will also gain practical exposure through internships, field visits, rehabilitation camps, and hands on training, helping them build industry relevant skills.

Focus on affordable assistive technology and employment

MoU Coordinator Dr. Vijay Shankar Sharma said the partnership will also promote employment oriented skill training, entrepreneurship development, low cost assistive device innovation, awareness campaigns, and the expansion of rehabilitation services in rural areas. Joint workshops, seminars, training programmes, and research initiatives are expected to encourage innovation in the rehabilitation sector.

Dr. Ranjeet Kumar, Workshop Manager at the University Artificial Limb and Rehabilitation Centre, said the centre already provides free prosthetic limbs and rehabilitation services to persons with disabilities, and the new collaboration will further enhance its outreach and capabilities.

While the university will contribute academic expertise and research infrastructure, BMVSS will provide technical know how, rehabilitation services, and professional training support. The three year agreement is expected to improve the quality of life of persons with disabilities by enhancing access to modern rehabilitation services, promoting social inclusion, and creating greater opportunities for education, employment, and independent living.
