Shakuntala University to install Rs 17.7 million digital prosthetics lab, bringing AI and 3D printing to rehabilitation education

MoU with Instalimb India will equip students with industry ready skills while enabling the university to provide faster, precision fit artificial limbs to 30–40 beneficiaries every month.

In a significant step towards advancing rehabilitation technology and skill based education, Dr. Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University (DSMNRU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Instalimb India to establish a state of the art digital prosthetics and orthotics facility on campus.

Under the partnership, the university will receive advanced equipment and software worth approximately Rs 1.77 crore (Rs 17.7 million), including two high speed 3D printers, five 3D scanners, two laptops, and the Instalimb One software platform. The initiative aims to integrate cutting edge technologies such as 3D scanning, artificial intelligence (AI) based design, digital modelling, and 3D printing into prosthetics and orthotics education.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Sanjay Singh said the collaboration will provide hands on training to students, faculty members, clinicians, and technical staff, equipping them with practical expertise in digital prosthetics manufacturing and modern rehabilitation technologies. It will also establish the university as a leading centre for digital prosthetics and orthotics education, training, and research.

The adoption of digital workflows is expected to significantly reduce the time required to manufacture prosthetic limbs while improving precision and comfort for users. Once the project becomes fully operational, the university will be able to provide digitally designed and manufactured artificial limbs to 30–40 persons with disabilities every month, enhancing access to high-quality assistive devices.

The initiative is also expected to strengthen the universitys academic and research capabilities by aligning its curriculum with emerging industry standards in rehabilitation engineering and assistive technology.

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by Registrar Rohit Singh, Dean Prof. V.K. Singh, MoU Coordinator Dr. Vijay Shankar Sharma, Dr. Ranjeet Kumar, Workshop Manager at the Artificial Limb and Rehabilitation Centre, and representatives of Instalimb India.
